1. Why are these changes being introduced?
In November 2008, the Better Regulation Office and former Department of Water and
Energy undertook a review of the regulatory framework for plumbing and drainage in
The review was completed in May 2009 and the NSW Government introduced the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011 to provide for a single regulator (NSW Fair Trading) to take over jurisdiction of all plumbing and drainage regulation in NSW, and for the Plumbing Code of Australia to replace State-based standards.
As a result of the review, a single NSW regulator will reduce the regulatory complexity and therefore save time for tradespeople who have previously had to deal with multiple government agencies.
